golden ale
Strong golden ale is not strictly speaking a beer style, it is a description of the Belgian beer Duval, and the beers it inspires. Duvel, meaning Devil, is an ale that is surprisingly strong considering its mildness on the palate and its extremely clear light golden color. The color might suggest a light lager, such as Coors Light, but brews like Duvel are neither. They are strong, golden ales, fruity, hoppy, and complex. Duvel is a top-fermented true ale that undergoes an elaborate triple fermentation. An unusual characteristic of Duvel is that it may be served very cold or at warmer ale temperatures. It is an excellent introduction to strong ale, tasty without being overpowering, with a pleasant dry finish.
There is a worthy Canadian version of golden ale made available by Unibroue of Quebec, La Fin du Monde (the end of the world). It too undergoes triple fermentation, but it is slightly darker in color and is sweeter than Duvel. If you can't find Duvel then you could do worse than sampling La Fin du Monde.
